Progress Update 22nd January 2018
There is an awful lot going on behind the scaffolding! The roof coverings have been stripped off and the first 14 trusses have been uncovered to enable the architect and engineer to work out the best method of repairing the rotten rafter ends and to strengthen the roof.
After our site meeting today we were taken up onto the scaffolding and Gethin Harvey (Nicholas Warns Architects) and Markus Munford (Eastern Foundry Limited) showed us the extent of the repair work required. Every rafter end will need a tailor made solution. It was fascinating to see at close quarters the structure of the 14th century rafters and more recent repair work, and the extent to which it has has shifted over time.
The cost consultant (Chris Aldridge of Philip Pank Partnership) is now reassessing the budget.
